Head Football Coach – Rick Zepeda, Class of 1988 – ST. PAUL / LSU - 1994
Head Coach Rick Zepeda is motivated to be working with his beloved St. Paul Swordsmen! A graduate of 1988, Coach Zepeda was a 2 time All Angelus League performer and captain of the 1987 Swordsmen football team in his playing days. He knows all about the traditions and expectations of a St. Paul football coach, having been tutored under legendary St. Paul coach – Marijon Ancich from 1994 to 2004, coach Z has been lucky enough to coach under 3 head coaches who have won either a national championship or state championship. Respectively, they are: Marijon Ancich, Scott Meyer (Corona Del Mar), and Jason Negro (St. John Bosco). He is eager to share his experiences with his current St. Paul players and families.
This will be Coach Zepeda’s 20th year of coaching high school football. Coach emphasizes the details of the game every day with his players. He believes in his Faith, Academics, and the sport of Football, are the tools to a successful life. He believes in developing the relationships with his football players and football parents are what makes ST. PAUL FOOTBALL a great experience.
In his first stint as a head varsity coach, Coach Zepeda helped turn around a once prominent football program, El Rancho High School, from a 0-10 season, to a CIF playoff participant in 2 consecutive seasons. Under Coach Zepeda, 2 of his players received NCAA FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIPS for the first time in 17 years at the Ranch.
In 2012, as a defensive assistant, he spent a year at St. John Bosco High School, where they won a Trinity League Championship for the first time in school history and their first Division 1 CIF semifinal appearance since 1986. As a freshman head coach at St. Paul, coach won 3 consecutive league titles for the Swordsmen. As a varsity assistant and defensive coordinator for the Swordsmen, coach helped Marijon Ancich win 3 league titles, 1 CIF Finals appearance, 1 semifinal appearance and 3 quarter final appearances. He credits his success to great leadership and great staff members, but mostly to highly motivated players!
Coach Zepeda is determined to re-instill the “confident mentality”, he was taught as a student athlete at St. Paul. He is working diligently with his staff and team to bring back the “Championship” culture for which Swordsmen fans are accustomed. The whole team is eager to showcase their hard work and discipline on and off the football field.
Coach is married to the former Ms. Sarah Duarte class of '95. Together they have 2 children, Corina, 12, and Orlando 9. They have been happily married for over 12 years and coach believes behind every great coach, there is an even greater woman. They reside in Whittier, where his daughter attends Beatitudes Catholic School, and his son attends Leffingwell Elementary.
